Unexpected

The day I posted that the name of my blog is now “open to change” I had no idea I would learn so quickly what that means.

That afternoon  I left to pick up a prescription at  my nearby pharmacy. Waiting in the drive-through line, I heard a tap on my passenger-side window. A COVID-19 masked man with a clipboard and pen in hand was motioning, trying to tell me something.  I rolled down the window.

“Pardon me, ma’am, but I thought you’d want to know your dress is caught in your door and is dragging on the street.” I looked down. Sure enough, my dress—actually a long, navy blue sweater— was just as he described it. Helpful information! I opened the door, retrieved the tail end of my sweater and turned to thank him through the still-open window, thinking that would be the end of it  But then he didn’t step away, as I’d expected.  Rather, he seized  a window (so to speak) of opportunity.

Consequences

“Actually, ma’am, “I’m volunteering here. While we’re waiting, would it be all right if I give you some information?”  I wasn’t about to say no after his act of chivalry.

And so he told me about a national non-profit organization for which he was collecting donations—an organization that creates awareness of school bullying and its life-and-death consequences.

With three cars still ahead of me, I then asked what led him to volunteer for that group. Not only was his response intriguing, it also included an uncanny connection to my blog’s new name, “open to change.”

Intriguing

After graduating from college, he said, he’d gone into business, just as he’d plan to do. Then one day, for no known reason, he felt a calling to make a change. “To do something different — something for others!” He didn’t know what that would be. However, shortly thereafter he learned about the anti-bullying organization. Because of earlier experiences in his own life,  this non-profit appealed to him. Since that time,  he’s been regularly involved in fundraising for them.

I’d ended my first open- to- change blog post by expressing eagerness to hear blog-readers’ stories. I assumed these would come through your “reply” comments.

Instead, I became aware of my need to be open to various ways of discovery.  To recognize signs that seem to be showing up everywhere. In ordinary as well as  unexpected places. From letting go of things once considered precious to taking advantage of opportunities–

Incorporating what may seem like a small change can result in better lives for others, known and unknown.

I really appreciate the new name of your blog. To be open to change is to be open to the Holy Spirit that speaks to us from the most unexpected corner of our life.
