Book Club Discussions–
At “The Happy Hookers” club in Colorado Springs with the author. The discussion followed the book club questions but also included personal stories the members shared. Several members of the club identified themselves as oldest daughters.
At “Bluestockings,” a book club that has been meeting in the Kansas City area for more than two decades. The group gathered to discuss Patricia Schudy’s non-fiction book about family relationships and family relationships. Those attending included a member who is an oldest daughter and her guest–her own oldest daughter who was visiting from “across the pond.”This book club is one the author belonged to for several years before leaving the Show-Me State for the Rocky Mountains.
Questions for Book Clubs–

- Is there any story teller in the book with whom you couldn’t identify?
- Based on your experience, is the childhood role of oldest daughters different from their siblings?
- If there is a difference, is there one word that defines it?
- Based on your experience, are there different family expectations for an oldest daughter in adulthood?
- How likely is it for adults to change the roles they grew up with in their families of origin? (As frequently suggested in the “For Reflection” sections.)
- Did you gain any new information or awareness as a result of reading this book? If so, what difference will it make in your relationship with your family?
- How did you feel when you finished reading this book?
- If you are the oldest daughter and oldest child in your family–would your life have been different if you had an older brother?
