An Upshot

Sometimes, it’s not what you say. It’s what you don’t say.  In my opinion, it’s both.

Today the sitting-size rock that greets me on my frequent trail walks said nothing.  Nada.  It was bare (except for my shadow). Bereft of the painted rocks wearing messages of “Hope” and “We Rise by Lifting Others Up” and a recent short-lived, “Be Happy.”   All gone.

I felt as deflated as a backyard water slide  recently being readied for winter pack up and put away.  Where had the rocks gone? Would someone have pocketed them?  If so, I wanted to post the National Park Service’s message: “Take only memories and pictures.  Leave only footprints.”

Nonetheless, I continued on my walk.   And looked up!   There, for the first time in days I hadn’t stop to count was the famous fabled Colorado-blue sky.  Not a cloud in sight. No trails of western smoke.   Just tall trees waving “Hello, glad to see you again.”

Proving, if proof be needed, that for every downside, there’s an upside.  And so, we can choose to remember:

Jesus says, “Do this in memory of me.” There are many ways to remember. There are many ways to be remembrance.
